Required - Assignment

The following tasks are the same as those looked at in the "Integrate commercial computing packages" assignment starting on page 9-3 of your Student work booklet. Tasks 1 to 6 require the completion of practical tasks using a database. Task 7 requires the completion of some theory, complete this last task using MS Word and include at least a one sentence summary of the question.

Complete the following "hands on" practical tasks;

Task 1 - Conversion from a database file to a spreadsheet file.
1.1 Export the "Elsam Back Yard Cars" database completed in unit 06 as a "Microsoft Excel 97-2000 (*.xls)" spreadsheet file.
1.2 Rename the work worksheet tab containing this material to "Car Sell".
1.3 Save the file to your H drive using a logic name. For example, "Elsam Cars - Unit 9"

Task 2 - Convert a Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet file into a spreadsheet file.
2.1 Open the spreadsheet file "Elsam Cars - Unit 9" created earlier.
2.2 Load in the file "Query results (Lotus123 file).wk4" from your N drive. Make sure you select the "Lotus 1-2-3 Files (*.wk?)" file type.
2.3 If you find you now have 2 separate spreadsheet files, use the "Move or Copy Sheet ..." feature under the "Edit" menu to merge them into a single spreadsheet file.
2.4 Rename the work worksheet tab containing this material to "Car Totals".
2.5 Resave your file.

Task 3 - Import a graphic into a spreadsheet file.
3.1 Load the company logo created in Unit 8 Design organisational documents. If it is not a picture (graphics) already, convert it by taking a screen dump of it and cropping off all the unwanted outside edges. Photo Editor should allow you to do this easily.
3.2 Open the spreadsheet file "Elsam Cars - Unit 9" created and modified earlier.
3.3 Copy and paste this company logo picture into this spreadsheet file, on a separate worksheet.
3.4 Rename the work worksheet tab containing this company logo picture to "Index".
3.5 Resave your file.

Task 4 - Import a word-processor document and create a chart.
4.1 Open the file "Stock_Prices.doc", you should find it in your N drive.
4.2 Open the spreadsheet file "Elsam Cars - Unit 9" created and modified earlier.
4.3 Copy and paste the "Car yard stock totals" table from the word-processor document into the spreadsheet file, on a separate worksheet.
4.4 Rename the work worksheet tab containing this material to "Stock Graph".
4.5 Using some or all of the details in this table, create ONE chart. The type of chart is up to you and what you feel is appropriate. Remember;
a) Line charts are best for representing "something over something". For example, something over time or something over money spent or something over distance travelled, etc
b) Bars charts are best for comparing. For example, amount of something boys against girls or measurement of something against different age groups or different test results earned by a group of students, etc
c) Pie charts are best for comparing a small group of figures to the total of these figures. For example, total money collected by a small group of students compared to the total collected by all of them or amount of fish caught by each boat compared to the total caught by the whole fleet, etc
4.6 Check the presentation of this table. For example, a heading
4.7 Resave your file.

Task 5 - Create and use hyperlinks.
5.1 Open the spreadsheet file "Elsam Cars - Unit 9" created and modified earlier.
5.2 Go to the "Index" worksheet and type in the following 3 labels; Car Sell, Car Totals and Stock Graph
5.3 Make each of these 3 labels hyperlink jumps to the appropriate worksheet. Make sure the presentation of these are good.
5.4 Make a hyperlink in each of the other worksheet so the user can use them the jump back to the index page. Make sure the presentation of these are good.
5.5 Resave your file.

Task 6 - You are asked to print out the completed spreadsheet worksheets. Skip this (Do not do). You will be emailing your work to your teacher.

Task 7 - File extension and associations. Instead of completing the table as requested in the student work booklet, answer the following;
7.1 Using the Windows help command or the internet, find out what is meant by the term "file extension". Give some examples.
7.2 Using the Windows help command or the internet, describe how to change the windows "file association" (changing program associations).
